Planning Tools for Interaction

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

1) Turn off power outlet

2) Plug in toaster to power outlet
3) Turn on power outlet
4) Set toaster to the preferred degree
5) Retrieve bag of bread from fridge/cupboard
6) Check expiry date, has it expired?
7) Open bag of bread
8) Take one or two slices of bread out of bag
9) Place bread in toaster
10) Push the lever down
11) Wait until toast is ready
12) Is the toast brown enough?
13) Allow time for toast to cool
14) Carefully take toast out of toaster
15) Place toast on plate
16) Eat or prepare your toast

Johnny Smith

John is a 75-year-old retired carpenter who still enjoys hikes in national parks and ridding his Harley-Davidson. He looks forward to the local club raffle and a catch up with the boys on a Thursday evening. He also enjoys playing bingo, listening to local radio and watching old western movies with his wife Jill. As he gets older and has to visit the hospital more often, he prefers quick and efficient healthcare with simple, bold instructions and hospital signs. He aims to enjoy the rest of his life traveling a little and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

· Location: Hobart

· Toaster Usage: Unfortunately Johnny has never used a fancy new electric toaster

· Computer/Internet Usage: PC, Occasionally browses the Internet with the help of his grandchildren.

· Computer Skill: Novice user. Finds things too complicated on the computer to use. Has an email but doesn’t know how to use it properly.

What is Information/Instructional design?

Wiki defines them as:

Information design is the skill and practice of preparing information so people can use it with efficiency and effectiveness. Where the data is complex or unstructured, a visual representation can express its meaning more clearly to the viewer.

Instructional Design is the practice of maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction and other learning experiences.

What is Interactive Design?

Wikipedia defines it as:

"the study of devices with which a user can interact, in particular computer users. The practice typically centers around "embedding information technology into the ambient social complexities of the physical world."It can also apply to other types of non-electronic products and services, and even organizations. Interaction design defines the behavior (the "interaction") of an artifact or system in response to its users."

Interactive design can be found in most, or these days, all devices. From computers, television, mobile phones, video game consoles, refrigerators. Purposes of interactive design is to make things user-friendly.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is a system which allows users to participate, converge and interact with information. This is with every users and the content itself. It is an upgraded version of Web 1.0 where the contributors had 100% control of the content and barely any interaction with the viewers. Web 2.0 makes sure that the content is controlled by the users for the users.

Examples of Web 2.0

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia where users can sign up and add and edit information of the subject. Users with no account are free to browse through articles.

Youtube.com
Youtube is an online video service where users from all over the world can upload videos. Different kinds of videos that include v-logs, short films, music videos etc. It has been a good source of exposure for users especially those that talent in the areas of video/film and music. General users are able to comment on other users uploaded videos and rate them.


Facebook.com
Facebook is a social networking website where users can create a profile and edit their personal information, add photos and videos. Users communicate by writing on other users walls. Users can also interact by updating "Status" via mobile phone if they have the facebook service on their mobile so others can know what they are doing or where they are at that present time.
